The End of Art?

The End of Art: An Argument Against Image AI  by Steven Zapata is an interesting if somewhat pessimistic exploration of how image-generation systems came into being and where the wider world of visual creation may be heading. His perspective raises important ethical and cultural questions, and many of his critiques are hard to dismiss.

Personally, while I agree with a number of his points, I also see an extraordinary amount of innovation emerging from artists and image makers who are embracing this new medium. The technology is undeniably disruptive, but it is also opening creative doors that simply did not exist before.

As has been true throughout art history, it’s the intersection between human intention and technological capability where the most compelling work tends to arise. Tools may evolve, but it is the artist’s vision that ultimately gives those tools meaning.
