Pop Icon

Case Study

Overview

Pop Icons, owned and operated by Laurence Carpenter, is a renowned dealer specialising in high-end pop music memorabilia, including guitars, handwritten lyrics, clothing, and iconic accessories. Their collection features legendary items associated with music legends such as Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and John Lennon—each with immense historical and collectible value. Laurence approached us in 2022 to create a bespoke visual portfolio that would elevate their most distinguished items.

Objectives

Our goal was to produce high-quality, striking product photography and videography highlighting Laurence's collection's uniqueness and prestige. We aimed to create images that visually tell the story of each item’s history, using a combination of dramatic lighting and setting to accentuate their rarity. The shoot needed to reflect the exclusivity of these artefacts and appeal to collectors and fans alike.

Solutions & Approach

Pre-Production & Styling: We collaborated closely with Laurence to understand the essence of each piece. We prepared a detailed shot list and conducted test shots a day before the main shoot, experimenting with lighting, angles, and backgrounds to ensure the perfect dramatic effect.

High-End Setting & Lighting: The shoot took place in our dedicated studio, utilising a dark background coupled with rim and fill lighting to accentuate the contours and details of each guitar and memorabilia. This style created a striking, high-contrast visual effect that highlighted the intricacies and craftsmanship of each artefact.

Two-Day Shoot & Client Collaboration: The process was split over two days: one for testing and setup, and the main day for capturing the full range of items. During the shoot, Laurence provided valuable feedback and ensured the vision aligned with his expectations.

Capturing Unique Items and history through the lens: We photographed legendary guitars attributed to Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr, Jimmy Page, and Keith Richards. Additionally, we showcased iconic handwritten lyrics from U2, personal clothing belonging to Mick Jagger, and a rare amplifier previously owned by John Lennon, each shot to emphasise their heritage and exclusivity.

Dynamic Photography & Videography: We employed static and dynamic shooting techniques, including behind-the-scenes videography, to comprehensively view each artefact. This multi-faceted approach enhanced the storytelling and allowed us to produce engaging content suitable for online galleries, promotional use, and collector showcases.

Results & Impact

The result was a captivating visual portfolio that perfectly showcased the grandeur and rarity of Laurence’s collection. The high-resolution images and video content not only elevated the status of the memorabilia but also served as a compelling marketing tool appealing to enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Our careful planning and collaboration with the client were essential to the success of this bespoke project.
